Questions

Frequently asked questions

If you don't see your question here, email Harrison directly — every reply is personal.

  • Does my child need to know chess already?+

No experience needed. The class starts at the very beginning — how the board is set up and how each piece moves.

  • What ages is this for?+

Ages 6–12. Younger or older siblings may be considered by request depending on maturity, experience, and group fit.

  • Can younger or older siblings join?+

The main class is designed for ages 6–12. Younger or older students may be considered by request depending on maturity, experience, and group fit.

  • Do we need to bring a chess board?+

No — chess boards, pieces, and learning materials are provided.

  • Can parents stay?+

Parents are welcome and encouraged to stay during the free open house. During the 6-week program, parent observation is at the instructor's discretion and depends on room capacity and whether it supports the learning environment. Parents who observe are expected not to interrupt, coach from the side, or disrupt the class.

  • What if my child misses a class?+

Missed classes are not refunded or prorated because the program reserves your child's spot for the full cohort. Catch-up material may be provided when possible. If a child misses multiple classes, Harrison may contact the parent/guardian to discuss a catch-up plan, transfer option, or whether the program is still a good fit.

  • What if Harrison's Chess Class cancels a class?+

If a class is cancelled by Harrison's Chess Class due to instructor illness, venue issue, emergency, or another unavoidable reason, families will receive a make-up option, credit, or prorated refund if a make-up is not possible.

  • What is the refund policy?+

Refunds are available until 4 days before the first class. After that, fees are non-refundable unless the program is cancelled or a make-up cannot be provided.

  • What happens if the class fills up?+

Spots are limited and are confirmed once payment is received. If the class fills, families may be placed on a waitlist. If enrollment grows, students may be split into smaller groups by age and experience with additional helper or instructor support.

  • What happens if the venue becomes unavailable?+

If the venue becomes unavailable due to emergency, closure, weather, access issue, or booking problem, Harrison's Chess Class will communicate with families and offer a make-up option, credit, prorated refund, alternate date, or backup venue when reasonable.

  • Is this competitive?+

No — the class is beginner-friendly and focused on learning, confidence, and sportsmanship. Friendly games and a mini tournament are part of the experience, not the pressure.

  • What happens if my child is disruptive?+

We use gentle redirection first. If behaviour continues or affects safety or learning, Harrison will contact the parent/guardian. Aggression, violence, bullying, threats, or repeated disruption may result in removal from the program.

  • Are individual lessons available?+

Yes. Individual lessons are available by request for kids who want extra help or more focused improvement.

  • How is payment handled?+

A payment form is sent to your email after registration is reviewed. A spot is confirmed once payment is confirmed. Payment is completed through Stripe.

  • Is a deposit available?+

A $50 deposit may be available by request. If a deposit is approved, the remaining balance is due no later than the day before the first class. Unpaid spots may be released after 24–48 hours.

  • Can parents take photos?+

Parents may not photograph or record other children without consent. Photo/video consent for Harrison's Chess Class promotion is handled separately during registration.

  • What about washroom assistance?+

Children should be able to use the washroom independently. If a child requires washroom assistance, a parent / guardian must remain available to assist. Staff and helpers do not provide washroom assistance.

  • Can my child bring food or a phone?+

Children may bring their own snack if needed, but food must not be shared because of allergy concerns. Water is available. Phones and devices must be silent and put away during class unless approved.

  • Is the location accessible?+

Yes — the venue has elevator access, accessible entry, washrooms nearby, and water available. A first aid kit and AED are located in the main lobby area.

  • Who do I contact with questions?+

Email chess@harrisonmantla.com — Harrison personally replies to every parent.
